The training is over and we are now entering the week of the ride – nervous is not the word. Between us we have completed over 3,000 miles of training since Xmas. Hopefully this will be enough as we enter the unknown of back to back days of 80+ miles of cycling – so far our longest rides have been about 50-60 miles.
The team bus will be setting off from Halifax at 6:30am on Thursday morning laden with cyclists, bikes and half a ton of bananas! We plan to set off from Morecambe at around 9:30am (after rush hour), a lunchtime break at Hawes and then arrive in Osmotherly (hopefully before dark!) for our overnight stay in the 5-star luxury that is Osmotherley Youth Hostel.
Hopefully we can find an accommodating pub for a good pub meal and a couple of cheeky, well-earned beers.
Saddle sores pending, we hit the road again at 9am on Friday making the short journey to the nemesis of the route – Sutton Bank. This hill (or
wall) has claimed many a cyclist with gradients in part of over 25% - oh dear!
Once we have managed to cycle/walk/crawl over the summit we continue onto the coast to Scarborough and then northwards to Whitby – finally arriving at the end. Let’s hope it will be on Friday and we have enough energy for a celebratory night out.
